SOUTh's secession
The states in black above, are the Southern states that 'separated' from the United States. They considered themselves their own union and called themselves the Confederate States of America.
The reason for the separating, was because of all the disagreements between the North and South,
Union forts soon moved to go on confederate land, one was Fort Sumter. The South was not happy, and wanted them to leave immediately. The Union refused, and the Southerners got frustrated, they started to fire shots at them on April 12, 1861. This was the beginning of the Civil War.
- Slavery
- Government was too strong with Lincoln
- They thought the North was going to "control" them

Slavery
This was one cause of the whole war. Many disagreements were going on at the time over slavery. The South believed slavery was okay, while the North thought it was wrong. This argument has been going on for years. The North had enough and took a stand, and created a barrier to give a sign to the South that they are not giving up on this fight.

Government too Strong
While slavery lead more to the war, the South mainly succeeded because they didn't want to be overruled by someone against slavery. They lost interest in America, and wanted to be able to have a say in the government. Southerners all agreed Lincoln was too strong in office, and sent out many death threats to him. Almost all the Southerners hated Lincoln for all his choices. Soon, after slavery ended,
Lincoln was assassinated.

North taking Control
Lincoln was on the North's side, the South felt their own country was going against them. They also thought the North was going to take control and be in charge. This outraged many Southerners. Farmers in the South didn't want to lose all their slaves they spent money on. They left the Union because they wanted to be able to get a say in something.
