Lincoln's election
"Every advocate of slavery naturally desires to see blasted, and crushed, the liberty promised the black man by the new constitution."
- Abraham Lincoln, November 14, 1864
With the United States on the verge of war, a man named Abraham was faced with a deeply divided Democratic Party and the task of satisfying the country. Abraham Lincoln ran against Stephen Douglas in 1858. He was running for the spot in the U.S. Senate, but lost when he argued against the spread of slavery. Anti-slavery usually wasn't popular belief at the time, so it was important that Abraham like to speak his mind. Even though he wasn't able to win the U.S. Senate seat for Illinois, he became a national figure. In November 1860, Lincoln was nominated for the presidential run after the third ballot.
Abraham ran against three people, a Southern Democrat named John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate named John Bell, and a Northern Democrat named Stephen Douglas, who already ran against Abraham for the U.S. Senate seat and won it.
Lincoln started getting a lot of hate for his anti-slavery campaign. He started getting a lot of hate mail and he got robbed an event. In the South, many people were starting riots and rallies. Most riots ended with pictures of Abraham being burned in fires. Southerns did not like the idea of losing slavery. With the loss of slavery, they felt they needed to make it their power to stop him. Fact: Abraham Lincoln got so much hate mail, he kept a box full of letters labeled 'assassination'.

"Slavery is founded in the selfishness of man's nature -- opposition to it is in his love of justice. These principles are an eternal antagonism; and when brought into collision so fiercely, as slavery extension brings them, shocks, and throes, and convulsions must ceaselessly follow. Repeal the Missouri Compromise -- repeal all compromises -- repeal the declaration of independence -- repeal all past history, you still can not repeal human nature. It still will be the abundance of man's heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak." - Abraham Lincoln, October 16, 1854
November 6, 1860, the election was held. With the second highest voter turnout in history, 81.2%, Lincoln won the Electoral College votes and took 40% of the popular votes. He did not carry one slave state. He mostly got votes from the North.
Abraham Lincoln was hailed as once one of the greatest presidents. He was the first Republican president to win. He was able to bring an end to slavery and fixed the broken nation by using his different opinions, which was very unusual at the time.
