Economic differences between north and south
NORTH
Due to the North's soil and climate, there weren't many farms. They were known to having more factories and cities than farmlands. In 1860 1/4 of Northerners lived in urban areas. Slavery died out because there weren't many farms around. Transportation was a lot easier in the North because the South had dirt roads. This was a great advantage for those using the Underground Railroad because it was easier for them to get through the North faster. It boosted the rate of 2/3 more railroad systems for slaves. The North was also known for being more educated than the South. That was because there were more schools in the North than the South. Which lead to better jobs for Northerners.

SOUTH
There was a lot more fertile soil and better climate in the South which caused for more farms. On these farms you would see tobacco, but throughout the years cotton got more popular. The agriculture was more profitable, and there were few Southerners with the need of industrial development, this made it 80% labor work on farms. Although, 2/3 of South didn't have slaves, there were still as many blacks as whites. More southern, New Orleans was the only big city known in the 1860's due to all the farms, nobody cared too much for cities back then. For the South, their economy was decreasing a lot, while the North's economy was through the roof. More children in the South were seen outside and at home, than in school because either school was too expensive, or there weren't any nearby.
