13th Amendment - The 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, correctly stopped the institution of slavery. The approval of the amendment came 8 months after the war had ended ( represented the struggle against (to stop) slavery). " Some in the North were against fighting what they saw as a crusade to end slavery." [ history channel / 13th amendment] President Abraham Lincoln realized in 1862 that it was worthless to have a war if they weren't going to get rid of slavery. President Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, stating that slaves still in rebelling territory on January 1, 1863 would be announced free forever. Only freed slaves in places outside Union control. President Lincoln admitted a constitutional amendment was necessary to arrange the end of slavery. In 1864 congress argued on several proposals which insisted against the discrimination of blacks. A republican victory for the Presidential election which guaranteed success for the amendment in 1864. In January of 1865 the House passed the measure, it was sent to the states for ratification, Georgia finally ratified on December 6, 1865 and slavery in the United States was finally banished. Lincoln's victory set a motion to the ratification of the Amendment. The 13th amendment was passed to "guarantee the legality and perpetuity of slavery was a result to the slave states, rather than to end it."

The 15th Amendment was adopted in 1870. African Americans allied with white people in the Southern states to have a Republican Party have power. Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American to be in the U.S. Senate. The Voting Rights Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson on August 6, 1965. After the Voting Rights Act the government was weakened. The Voting Rights Act gave African Americans to change the seen of voters, they challenged the voting restrictions.
