lincoln and douglas debates
The Lincoln/Douglas Debates were a series of formal political debates between one another. It was back and fourth debates whether Slavery should be legal or illegal.
Lincoln
Lincoln wanted states to follow the same laws and be equal. He believed that all men are equal. When Douglas disagreed on Lincoln's statement, he argued back saying, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This was said before the Civil War started and would soon be true. Lincoln also declared that the Federal Government should decide whether or not slavery is allowed. In addition being President, he represented the Republican party.

Douglas believed that the states should decide whether they want to have slaves or not. He thought the government had no right to tell which territory is slave free. He often threatened Lincoln of expanding slavery into more territory, but never did. Also, Douglas argued that Lincolns level of Republican Ideology was between consolidation and confederation. He represented the Senate and the Democrat party.
