slavery
Slavery was one of the main start of the civil war. Slavery started when Africans were sent to America on Dutch ships to work on farms with no pay.
Slaves were mostly in the South due to the climate and fertile soil. After the American Revolution slaves in the North were unprofitable (prices dropped). By 1860, South's "peculiar institution" tied the region's economy. Many Southerners argued that Blacks were incapable of taking care of themselves. The treatment to slaves got worse because the slaves population got bigger. Whipping was one of the most popular punishment.
When the slaves were sold, they were mostly split up from their families, and would never see each other again because they would end up on different plantations.

Most slaves, when they were working in the fields or just trying to pass time, would make up songs. Many songs would have secret, hidden meanings behind them so the slave owners wouldn't notice. The songs would include how to get revenge on their owners, or how to escape and leave slavery. This song below was created by slaves, and is called Go Down Moses, sung by Louis Armstrong.
The Blacks had no rights because the Southerners feared they could rebel. Due to the rebelling scare, in 1857 the Supreme Court, the Dred Scott Decision, ruled Blacks sub-human property with no rights of citizenship. They were unable to protest.
Slaves would often hold secret meetings, faked illness, destroy farms, runaway (a short while or forever), or maybe even commit murder instead of work on the cotton farms. Many slaves would run away to the North because the North was considered free territory. They would often run through the underground railroads.
Harriet Tubman was a very famous slave in America, because when she got free to the North, she went back to the South to help save other slaves get free.

There are many stories of slaves, but they are almost all anonymous. One short story from a slave is,
“Muh gran Calina tell me how he got heah. He say he playin on beach in Africa, an big boat neah duh beach. He say, duh mens on boat take down flag, an put up big piece uh red flannel, an all chillun dey git close tuh watuh edge tuh see flannel an see whut doin. As you can see, this is very poor grammar. Blacks were mainly born into slavery, so they never got to get the education Whites got. They never got to properly speak the English language.
The North hated what the South was doing. Mainly because the North never had slaves that worked in fields. Although, it was part of the South's lifestyle to have slaves. So whenever someone threatened to free all slaves, the South would go crazy.
President Lincoln was having trouble controlling the South in keeping them as one union in the South's Secession. All the Southerners hated Lincoln and sent him many death threats. The North soon had enough, 5 weeks after Lincoln's Election, the Civil War started.

On September 22, 1862 Abraham Lincoln presented the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation (PEP). The PEP is the power of the United States armed forces, that all slaves in states that were still in rebellion, 100 days after September 22 they are forever free. Soon Blacks were allowed to join the army, and were called the US Colored Troops (USCT). They won many battles, medals, and the union won because of them. 8 months after the civil war ended, slaves were announced free on December 6, 1865. This was the end of slavery in the United States and labeled the 13th Amendment.
